ANC conference must elect leaders who send message that corruption will not be tolerated, says Makhura

Gauteng Premier and ANC provincial deputy chairperson, David Makhura says this weekend’s ANC national conference is an opportunity for the party to get its house in order and to deprive the opposition of any chance of governing the country in future.

Leaders to be elected at the ANC conference must have strategies on how they planned to intervene on these scourges.

“I hope that the ANC will come up with a leadership that is so clear on these issues,” Makhura said.

Corruption had become the contagion that affect every sector of society. The country needed to sort out accountability and governance.

“We have to sort out governance in such a way that there is no place for corruption and corrupt people, we got to send a strong message that corruption must never be tolerated in our society,” Makhura said.

Makhura, in an interview with The Citizen yesterday, said it does not give him sleepless nights that the opposition DA is gunning to take over Gauteng province from the ruling party in 2019 because that will not happen if the ANC did the right thing.

The opposition party would fight a losing battle in its attempt to unseat the ANC in the province as it was banking on the current ANC weaknesses at various levels that do not inspire public confidence in the ruling party including corruption and infighting.

“They hope and pray that the ANC will not get its act together. They are betting on ANC making mistakes again because they won Johannesburg and Tshwane due mistakes that the ANC made in the past, they are not counting on their successes,” Makhura.

He was reacting to the recent claim by DA Gauteng leader, John Moodey that the opposition party was preparing to wrest the province from the ANC at the 2019 elections. Makhura the ANC must correct its mistakes by getting the country’s economy to work for everybody. The ruling party would be able to do so by electing the right leadership who would work for the people so as to disappoint the opposition. “They are scared by the fact that if the ANC elected leadership that is doing the right thing, even the opposition members will vote for the ANC in 2019.

“They pray that we continue to be divided and disorganised so that they can govern this country, but I pray that the ANC gets its act together at this conference.

Makhura lambasted the recent DA scorecards that gave him a 5/10 score. He said it was disingenuous and totally dishonest of the opposition to assess him or his executive council on e-toll which was a national competency issue. He said the whole DA scoreboard assessment was a farce because as the opposition they would never give a positive score anyway.

“Because they see that 2019 is around the corner, they want to discredit us. I don’t expect them to have mercy on us, they must at least be honest,” Makhura said.
