The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has confirmed that its branch treasurer at Impala mine, Mpeke Nonyana was shot and killed on Tuesday.
In a statement released after Nonyana’s death, Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa said they made a pledge at the scene where the leader was killed to “mobilise all our resources to ensure that the senseless killing of mineworkers stop.”
It is still not clear why Nonyana was killed.
“It is not for us to speculate on the motive for the killings. Whatever they are, nothing can justify the taking of another’s life. Just two weeks ago we lost another five mineworkers to the dangers of going underground. Now, for workers to be killed by cowardly assassins is absolutely unacceptable,” Mathunjwa said.
He called on police, the Hawks and the mine management to investigate Nonya’s death “without fear or favour.”
“Everyone must play their part to ensure that Nonyana’s killing is not allowed to be another resolved murder, which only serves to embolden the criminals to continue with these dastardly deeds.”
