Baby dies, 18 injured in Pinetown crash

A baby girl was found at the bottom of the embankment with severe injuries, and was declared deceased.

A baby was killed and 18 people injured in a crash on the M13, Durban bound, at the bottom of Fields Hill in Pinetown on Sunday afternoon, reports Highway Mail.

According to Rescue Care Paramedics, a taxi left the roadway and rolled down an embankment several times, causing most of the passengers to be ejected from the vehicle.

“Multiple casualties were found and immediately more ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics were dispatched to assist.

“A small baby girl was found at the bottom of the embankment with severe injuries. Unfortunately there wasn’t anything paramedics could do for the baby and she was declared deceased on the scene. The child was about one year old,” said Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson.

Three patients had to be rescued by Metro Police and SAPS Search and Rescue as well as RescueTech using a specialised basket and roping system.

“At this stage the events leading up to the collision are unknown. However, SAPS was on scene and will be investigating further,” he said.
