Rotting corpse found in Helen Joseph maintenance duct

Police and the forensics department were called to the scene following the discovery of the body.

An investigation has been launched after a rotting corpse was discovered at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Steve Mabona said the decomposed male body was found in a maintenance duct in the hospital, Northcliff Melville Times reported.

“The continuous stench prompted an investigation, with assistance of the Department of Infrastructure and Development, the body was found.” He said,

The hospital is still trying to verify when the body, which is yet to be identified, went missing.

Mabona said the department was still trying to ascertain who from the hospital was responsible for the body before it went missing, and that they are still trying to verify whether the body was reported missing.

Mabona added police and the forensics department were called to the scene following the discovery of the body and that the matter was still under investigation.
