60 ANC MPs to vote against Zuma if secret ballot is used – Malema

In an interview with Reuters, EFF leader Julius Malema said should a secret ballot be used in the upcoming no confidence motion against President Jacob Zuma, then he is of the understanding that 60 ANC MPs would turn on him and vote with the opposition.

“I personally spoke to more than 60 MPs of the ANC who have committed that if we give them a secret ballot they will deliver.

“They’ve asked that this thing must be secret. They are not happy themselves,” Malema told Reuters.

Zuma has survived previous votes of no confidence against his presidency, with the ANC backing him despite growing discontent with his leadership.

Several leaders have spoken out about Zuma, including Derek Hanekom, Gwede Mantashe and, more recently, Pravin Gordhan, who called for him to step down.

“I think that the president should move aside and let somebody take over this country and reset the course so that we can fulfill the kind of aspirations that Mandela and his generation had for South Africa,” Gordhan said.

“State capture is a fact we must stop ducking around, it’s a fact. Those who are named in various sources don’t require any more evidence to be presented to the public or wherever,” he said.

“I know we are a country that is run by the rule of law and the constitution, so there are some formal process we need to get through, but state capture is actually telling us those who are responsible for bringing people to book are the very ones who refuse to do it, they rather chase some innocent people.”
