An apparent hijacking accomplice was shot and killed by his victim on Friday evening on the Christiaan de Wet Road and Rinyani Street intersection in Roodepoort, Gauteng.
The Roodepoort Northsider reports that the victim who turned hero allegedly opened fire on three men who attempted to hijack him and his vehicle.
The hijacking went completely wrong as one of the suspects died at the scene while one was wounded and died on the way to hospital, while a third was believed to be wounded and got away.
Spokesperson for Honeydew Police Station Captain Balan Muthan confirmed to the Northsider a case of attempted hijacking and armed robbery had been opened.
The third suspect was also believed to be wounded but managed to escape.
According to Muthan, of the two deceased suspects, one was shot in the head and the other in the chest.
Muthan revealed that the motorist was travelling with his wife when they were approached by the suspects.
“When he stopped at the robots as the light was red, he stated that ‘suddenly unknown men appeared, two on the passenger side, one on the driver’s side and pulled out the driver while the two pushed his wife in [the car],” said Muthan.
The trio tried to use a toy gun that was found at the scene.
The victim probably realised the gun was fake and pulled out a real one on them.
“The victim then shot one suspect in the head fatally, the other one in the chest and was taken to hospital while the other one ran away with shot wounds,” Muthan explained.
Unconfirmed details have emerged that the third suspect died on his escape. However, Muthan could not confirm the allegation.
Upon a search, a cellphone of the victim was found in one of suspects’ pockets, Muthan said.
He said the names of the suspects were unknown at this stage.
