In a statement on Friday, the EFF’s Johannesburg Regional Command Team said they were staging a sit-in at the City of Johannesburg’s offices to protest the actions of the Red Ants in the city.
Kgabo Hlonyana said their protest was against the speaker of the Johannesburg Council, Councillor Vasco da Gama, the MMC for public safety, Clr Michael Sun and the chief whip of council, Clr Calvin Wax.
It was in response to reports that “two people have been reported dead and tens more injured … while the Red Ants were … evicting residents of an informal settlement in Lanesia South Ward 120”.
They alleged that the city had “remained mute” despite the EFF telling them about the situation in the morning.
“Thus the EEF has resorted to a more aggressive approach to force the above -mentioned Council authorities to come up with an amicable solutions [sic] to put the violent evictions to a halt. This of course can only be done when the Council authorities together with the Executive Mayor go and address the residence of Lanesia [sic].
“The EFF Joburg Region condemns in the strongest possible terms the sudden silence by the City of Johannesburg authority not to deploy police authorities to calm the situation.”
They vowed to continue their sit-in at Mashaba’s offices until he reacted satisfactorily.
