A man who allegedly murdered a woman in Rietvallei appeared briefly in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Gauteng police said.

The case was postponed for further investigation. The 27-year-old man was kept in custody, said Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

The man was arrested on Friday following a tip-off from the community.

On October 19 around 7.40pm, police received a report of a shooting in Rietvallei Extension 3, near Krugersdorp.

Officers went to the address indicated in the report, and on arrival found people gathered around the dead woman and a wounded man.

“A witness told the police that the deceased’s son was allegedly chased by a certain group of boys from Rietvallei Extension 3 when he came home running,” said Sibiya.

“A few minutes later four unknown men arrived at his home, one armed with a firearm. An argument ensued between the four unknown suspects and the deceased’s son.”

The mother intervened and tried to stop the armed man from attacking her son. Five shots were fired and she was shot in the upper body.

Police searched for the four men, leading to the 27-year-old’s arrest.
