Woman’s burnt remains spark looting in Mpumalanga

As a result of the looting and violence, foreign shop owners have reportedly been advised to seek places of safety. 


Foreign-owned shops were looted on Wednesday by irate Middelburg residents following the discovery of a 25-year-old woman’s charred remains in Mhluzi, reports eNCA.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, reports News24, said: “When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that it was the body of a woman with the head covered with a plastic bag and the rest of the body wrapped in a blanket.”

Police also discovered that the victim had been burned with a hot plate and stabbed with a sharp object.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday and will appear in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.
