Illegal electricity connections spark protest action on Beyers Naudé Drive

Residents of Zandspruit have started barricading Beyers Naudé Drive and Marina Road with bricks and tyres to stage a protest this morning.

According to Johannesburg Metro Police’s Superintendent Wandile Mrubata, who is at the scene monitoring the situation, the demonstration is believed to have been sparked by the electrocution of two children in the area, he told Roodepoort Northsider.

The electrocutions are apparently the result of illegal electrical connections.

The condition of the children is unknown at this stage. Mrubata has advised motorists to use alternative routes. He also mentioned that City Power has been contacted to disconnect and take away the illegal cables.

Motorists are reporting major disruptions as a result of the protest which saw tyres being burned and stones being thrown across the major roadway.

Updates to follow as more information becomes available.
