Elderly man dies during Heidelberg farm attack

A 69-year-old man died in his house in Houtpoort on Wednesday after being shot during a robbery.

According to police spokesperson Capt. Kay Makhubele, an incident in which five suspects broke into a farm took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, he told Heidelberg/Nigel Heraut.

The victim was wounded in the chest and died at the scene. After this, the suspects made off with his car, household items, and a safe. Two getaway vehicles were allegedly used.

“A security guard suspected something was wrong when she saw a number of vehicles driving around on the farm property. She later flagged a SAPS patrol vehicle, and after police arrived at the scene, one suspect was arrested. They then discovered the victim’s body inside the house,” Makhubele explained.

Two suspects were later arrested in Ratanda, where police confiscated a firearm and the two getaway cars. Some of the stolen items were also recovered in the cars.

Cases of murder, house robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm and stolen goods have been opened and are being investigated.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate’s court soon.
