According to police, community members alleged that at about midday on the day in question, a 12-year- old schoolboy, who had disembarked from a train at the Anglers Station, was walking home alone when he was pursued by two unknown young men.

The schoolboy dropped his school bag and fled, as he allegedly sensed that he was about to be mugged by the two youngsters.

Lenasia South SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Khalipha Mvula said: “He then informed some of the community members, who went in search of the two young men and when they caught up with them in an open veld, they took matters into their own hands by assaulting them.”

By the time of the arrival of the police, one of the assault victims had already succumbed to his injuries and was certified as dead at the scene, while the other youngster had sustained only slight injuries.

“The acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Dungelo has condemned the actions of the members of the community who took the law into their own hands instead of handing over to the police any individuals who were accused of alleged involvement in criminal activities,” Sgt Mvula said.
