Ajay Gupta is now reportedly in India

Minister Gigaba says his department is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the Guptas are brought back to SA to address allegations against them.

Ajay Gupta is reportedly in India. The controversial Gupta brother allegedly has several summonses pending against him in the country regarding tax raids against Gupta properties.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said the department did not know where Ajay Gupta was, but investigations into the Guptas were ongoing.

“We are working with the Hawks, the police and the prosecutors – the NDPP [national director of public prosecutions – in order to bring them back to the country to face their charges,” Gigaba told the SABC.

The minister said he had met with Minister of Police Bheki Cele and Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha to discuss the documentation of the Guptas, as well as to ensure the Guptas could be brought back to South Africa.

“The minister of justice and the minister of police made it very clear that we must not tamper with the investigations taking place and [that we must be mindful] that if we revoke their citizenship or their permanent residency at the present moment, it will mean that the police are no longer able to summon them to come and answer the various allegations levelled against them,” Gigaba said.

The minister said his department was working closely with the police, adding Cele clearly indicated he would leave no stone unturned to ensure the Guptas are summonsed back to South Africa to address the allegations.

Acting Hawks head Yolisa Matakata announced in February a warrant of arrest for Ajay Gupta had been issued in relation to corruption.
