Mahumapelo is not going anywhere – North West ANC PEC

The PEC in the province says Mahumapelo should be removed through internal ANC processes.

The North West ANC PEC has decided that Premier Supra Mahumapelo, who is also the chairperson of the ANC in the province, will not vacate his office despite mounting calls amid recent violent protests that he should resign.

The decision was announced this afternoon following a meeting convened by the PEC this morning to decide Mahumapelo’s fate.

A group of Mahumapelo’s supporters had tried to disrupt the meeting during the day, but the premier addressed them before returning to the meeting.

It is reported that the acting chairperson of the Dr KK Region Zanele Mphafudi told the crowd gathered outside, where the PEC held its meeting today, that the provincial structure would engage with ANC national leaders.

Mphafudi reportedly blamed some members of the North West PEC for trying to destroy the ANC in the province.

The PEC called for Mahumapelo to be removed through internal party processes, it was further reported.

Mahumapelo withdrew his decision to step down as the premier, which he was due to announce today, after the PEC called a meeting to discuss and decide on the matter.

A wave of violent protests erupted in North West on April 18, calling for Mahumapelo to resign as premier. Shops were looted and property damaged during the anti-Mahumapelo protest.
