Malema says he has names of those ‘plotting to assassinate’ him

The EFF leader says he will be opening a case with the police.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says he has the names of the people from North West who are plotting to have him assassinated and that he will be opening a case for investigation.

He says he believes the plotters have links to the ANC and plan to have him executed in a fashion that is similar to that of North West businessman Wandile Bozwana, Malema told the Sowetan.

The Mahikeng-born businessman died in hospital after gunmen fired at him in Garsfontein, east of Pretoria, in 2015.

Shots were fired into the passenger side of the car where he was seated. His female colleague was driving the car. She sustained minor injuries.

In a statement the EFF issued on Tuesday night, the party said the assassination plot was received from a reliable source who indicated that a small group of individuals in North West had approached drug dealers in the Western Cape to assassinate Malema. However, the drug dealers turned down the assassination job because of their support for the EFF, the party added.

“These security threats also form part of several threats coming from right-wing forces, who use social media, private caller identities, and fake email platforms to pose death threats against the leadership of the EFF. These threats are largely linked to the EFF’s uncompromising and decisive leadership of the struggle for land expropriation without compensation and the relentless war against racism,” the statement reads.

Malema told the Sowetan he had even received threatening calls regarding former president Jacob Zuma’s removal and his recent engagements with President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Police Minister Bheki Cele yesterday requested police commissioner General Khehla Sitole to investigate the allegations of Malema’s assassination plot.

Cele and Malema had discussed the allegations.
