WATCH: Jessie Duarte confirms Zuma wanted Molefe to become finance minister

The top six were not impressed with former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe's credentials.

During an interview with SABC News, Duarte, the deputy secretary-general of the ANC, said while President Jacob Zuma wanted to appoint Molefe to replace former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, this was not welcomed by the top six.

“He brought the name of Brian Molefe into discussion, and we disagreed. We said, no, we don’t think that’s going to be a useful change. Of course, there were very stern words used.

“He did say, here’s a young man who has put Eskom straight – why can’t he assist elsewhere? I think at some points in our lives, all these truths will be told. The fact of the matter is that top six doesn’t always agree with everything the president says,” Duarte lamented.
