At least 50 people injured as Tornado hits Vaal Marina

Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi says two help centres have been set-up by the municipality to assist those who have lost everything.

At least 300 people were displaced and 50 others injured on Monday, after a tornado hit the Vaal Marina area in Midvaal, Gauteng, causing extensive damage, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen said paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 6pm  and found extensive damage caused by the tornado.

“Rooftops were blown off and power lines were damaged. People on the scene described it as a tornado to paramedics. Upon further assessment, paramedics found at least 50 patients sustained minor injuries. Half of the patients were treated on the scene and a total of 25 patients were transported by ER24, as well as another medical service on the scene, to hospital for further medical care,” Huyssteen said.

Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi told EWN two help centres had been set-up by the municipality to assist those who have lost everything. Baloyi said the number of properties damaged or destroyed by the natural disaster was expected to rise once a full assessment has been concluded.

“We will be going back today [Tuesday] and just try and access and see what the actual damage is. Electricity supply was completely cut off last night, with some of the electricity infrastructure damaged,” he said.
