Police in Kimberley are investigating a case of culpable homicide after eight people were killed in a road accident on the R31 near Kimberley, Northern Cape police said on Saturday.
Among the dead were five children aged between two and 14 and three other people aged 18, 30, and 38. The accident happened at about 8.15pm, Captain Olebogeng Tawana said.
A Toyota Land Cruiser bakkie rear-ended a Toyota Corolla, fatally injuring eight of the 12 occupants of the car. The driver of the Toyota Corolla and three other children were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Land Cruiser was also transported to hospital with minor injuries. The investigation was continuing, Tawana said.
Earlier, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said the crash occurred on the Barkley West road near Kimberley. While the circumstances surrounding the collision were not yet known, it was understood from bystanders that one of the vehicles allegedly made a U-turn in the road, he said.
