Legal victory for ‘Frankel 8’ in child abuse case

The High Court on Monday declared Section 18 of the Criminal Procedure Act unconstitutional.

This means that 20 years is no longer the limit for charging sexual abusers.

The ruling handed down by acting Judge Clare Hartford made it possible for the National Prosecuting Authority to criminally charge abusers more than 20 years after they sexually assaulted children and adults.

The challenge to the statute of limitations section was brought by the so-called Frankel 8, who accused billionaire philanthropist Sydney Frankel of abusing them decades ago when they were children.

Frankel died earlier this year.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
