Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a group of about eight suspects who shot and wounded a police officer, following an armed robbery yesterday at the Pienaarspoort railway station in Mamelodi East.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the police officers were on a routine patrol near the station, observing a group of suspicious looking people when the group opened fire.

Dlamini said a shoot-out ensued and the suspects fled. “In the process, a police officer was shot and wounded in the upper body and taken to the local hospital.

He is in a stable condition.

“The suspects had tied up the station’s guards before stealing an undisclosed amount of money from the safe. The guards were not injured,” Dlamini said.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have information about these suspects to come forward.

Dlamini said any information that may lead to the arrest and prosecution of these suspects will be rewarded.

He continued to say that any information about the whereabouts of these suspects may be Report it to Crime Stop at 08600-10111 at all hours.

Dlamini asked the public to report suspicious people and vehicles at all times.

“Serious and violent crimes that includes business robberies, house robberies and hijacking, are a priority and criminals committing these crimes are warned that their days are numbered,” Dlamini said.
