Mkhwebane confirms City Power probe

The public protector says the investigation by her office is at an advanced stage.

Public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has confirmed her office is investigating City Power, revealing that the probe is now at an advanced stage.

Mkhwebane confirmed her office’s investigation on the sidelines of her first nationwide stakeholder forum at the Johannesburg City Hall on Thursday.

“Yes, we’re investigating that, and I think we’re at an advanced stage with that investigation, and we’ll be issuing a report soon,” she said.

The investigation into the power utility comes in the wake of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba’s announcement this week that the city’s forensics department is also investigating City Power tenders valued at billions of rands.

On Tuesday, Mashaba fired the MMC for infrastructure Anthony Still after saying they could disagreed about suspending the utility’s managing director Sicelo Xulu.

City Power’s board has welcomed the forensic investigation.

Meanwhile, the utility’s board chairperson Reverend Frank Chikane says Xulu will remain in his position.

The reverend could not confirm or deny claims that Mashaba has been exerting pressure on the board to suspend Xulu.
