Watch: EC community loots cooldrinks from truck

Some of the looters made off with crates of two-litre cooldrinks.

A video of community members in Butterworth, Eastern Cape, looting a truck of cooldrinks is going viral, with thousands of views on Facebook and YouTube.

SA Crime Watch posted the video on YouTube and Facebook, which shows community members grabbing cooldrinks from a stationary truck in busy traffic.

The video begins with a view of people running and walking away with two-litre bottles and crates of cooldrinks. A swarm of people are seen running to the truck and looting it while other vehicles try to navigate around them. Even as the truck drives off, people can still be seen pulling cooldrinks from it.

According to SA Crime Watch, the date of the video is unknown.

TimesLive reported that the police had identified community members and were waiting for a case to be opened before they proceeded with necessary steps, but they said they were disappointed by the actions of the community.

In the beginning of December last year, The Citizen reported that, according to the Glenvista Community Policing Forum, a truck “transporting cooldrinks broke down on the N12 West Motorway between Voortrekker and Comaro Road off-ramps” and they then “got calls that the truck was being looted”.

Then later in December, The Citizen reported on two videos that surfaced on social media and were believed to have taken place in KwaZulu-Natal, where looters were seen ransacking a truck of beer and mealie-meal respectively in the two incidents.

In October, footage filmed by eNCA showed people looting shops in Braamfontein.
