Three held for Joburg robbery

A woman was on her way to work when three robbers grabbed her handbag and fled the scene.

Johannesburg Central police officers have arrested three men, aged between 24 and 29, for common robbery and possession of stolen property, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

“It is alleged that three suspects robbed a 33-year-old female at [the] corner [of] Dolly Rathebe and Langerman streets on [Friday morning],” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.

The victim was on her way to work when she was confronted by three robbers who grabbed her handbag and fled the scene.

Police officers on routine crime prevention duties saw men carrying a woman’s handbag. They stopped to search the men, who then ran away.

The officers gave chase and apprehended the men. The handbag was recovered along with all the victim’s belongings, including her cellphone.

The police investigation was continuing and the men would appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, Mbele said.
