Social media reactions: Molefe’s unpaid leave vs early retirement
Molefe's statements have left social media puzzled.
Former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe.
Brian Molefe’s ‘unpaid leave’ has left many questioning how employment at Eskom works. The court papers filed by Molefe reveal that he had taken early retirement instead of stepping down as the CEO of the electricity parastatal.
This statement has been endorsed by Eskom chair Ben Ngubane, who added Molefe had indeed taken early retirement, but once Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown had learnt of his R30-million payout through The Sunday Times, she made an inquiry that led to the board realising it had made a legal error.
This then led to his early retirement, now known as “unpaid leave”. While Molefe was on unpaid leave, he was also appointed as an MP. He was then reinstated as the CEO of Eskom after less than five months of being an MP.
Molefe’s statement left many questioning the bewildering employment conditions at Eskom. How is it that one can claim to step down from a position, take on a new role as an MP, be reinstated after taking retirement and treat it as unpaid leave?
#BrianMolefe took every absence reason in the #eskom HR rules. He resigned, got retrenched, retired, now unpaid leave
