Garsfontein police Captain Ilze Jones confirmed that bodies of a man (34) and a woman (64) were found with gunshot wounds.

Jones dismissed earlier reports that a man had shot his wife, “We are still investigating the connection between the two but it is believed they are relatives and police have the reason to believe the two had an altercation before the shots fired.”

She said the neighbouring store manager had heard no gunfire on Friday morning which could mean the incident occurred between Thursday evening and early Friday morning.

One of the store managers, who asked not to be named, said she had last seen the 64-year-old on Thursday afternoon.

“She was looking forward to a trip with a loved one.”

Jones said Barclay and Clegg staff called the owner in the morning after they found the shop locked from the inside.

“The two employees arrived to find the doors locked from the inside and the centre manager had helped the staff gain access into the shop.

“We cannot disclose any further details. If the man had shot first, killed the woman before turning the gun on himself but confirmed that a gun had been found on the scene.

A representative of Glenfair Boulevard said a statement would be issued by the centre

She could however confirm there had not been a robbery at the centre and that other stores were open. Family members were seen arriving at the store with some bursting into tears.

Cups of coffee were provided to them before they were taken to the centre management offices for counselling.
