Celebrities have taken to social media to voice their anger following a video of musician Mampintsha allegedly assaulting his girlfriend Babes Wodumo. They have called for his arrest and for people to stop booking him for shows.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa released a statement calling for Babes to press charges against Mampintsha.

“We’re absolutely horrified by the actions of Musician Mampintsha caught on video where he brutally abuses internationally celebrated artist Babes Wodumo. We do not only condemn this senseless act but call on Babes Wodumo to immediately press charges against him. Government will never tolerate gender-based violence. It is informed by a twisted logic of patriarchal power relations in society. We call on all South Africans to isolate the perpetrators & to fight & defeat gender-based violence with the same zeal as when we fought racism,” he said.

Economic Freedom Fighters national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said Mampintsha’s arrest was necessary because if nothing was done to help Babes Wodumo, the next step would be murder.

He said: “As a country, we are now all witnesses of the abuse of Babes Wodumo by Mampinthsa. The call to arrest Mampinthsa is significant because we are refusing to be complacent with [the] unforgivable crime of women abuse. For if nothing is done, the next step is murder. #ArrestMampinthsa.”

Following the video, fans had been worried about her safety, calling for those close to her to check up on her. Her friend and actor Natasha Thahane responded to the call and told social media users Babes Wodumo was “safe”.

She said: “It’s most likely not my place to update you guys but I know a lot of you are truly worried. Managed to get hold of Babes. She’s safe. Please keep her in your prayers.”
