Covid-19 update: SA records 5,644 new cases and 235 deaths

This now brings the cumulative number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2.770,575.


On Monday, South Africa recorded 5,644 new cases of Covid-19 in a 24-hour cycle.

This was announced by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), a division responsible for the surveillance of Covid-19.

This brings the cumulative number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2,770,575 representing a 17.6% positivity rate.

“As per the National Department of Health, a further 235 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 81,830 to date,” reads the statement.

It said that a total of 16.426,011 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors.

“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (35%), followed by Western Cape and Eastern Cape (16%) each. Free State accounted for 10%; Northern Cape accounted for 7%; Gauteng Province and Mpumalanga accounted for 6% each; North West accounted for 3%; and Limpopo Province accounted for 1% of today’s new cases.”

There has been an increase of 291 hospital admissions.
