Riot police step in as protests hit Main Reef

Police dispersed the crowd using teargas and rubber bullets.

Disgruntled residents of Matholesville and surrounding areas on the West Rand have caused chaos on Main Reef Road since early this morning (May 12), Roodepoort Record reports.

Traffic was extremely congested when motorists were rerouted as a stretch of Main Reef Road had to be closed at Gustav Street, Corlett Avenue and Progress Road due to the riot.

Teargas and rubber bullets were fired to disperse the angry rock-throwing crowds. Roodepoort police and the metro police have gone into negotiations with the upset resident members.
