Pretorian burnt ‘hero teen’ recovering after surgery

Pretoria burn survivor Sean Smith, 17, is recovering after he underwent reconstructive surgery on March 6, including the releasing of a muscle contracture and skin grafting beneath his arms.

After surgery, an entry was posted to the #HeroSean Facebook page updating friends and family that he was out of the operating room and already had a hamburger, chips and Coca-Cola, the Rekord Centurion reports.

“All went well and his pain is being managed,” the entry read.

Things took a turn on Friday two weeks ago, however, when Sean had to be admitted to hospital again after doctors discovered an infection.

His mother, Mé-Lissa Smith, said it was never easy having Sean back at the hospital.

She said emotions always ran high when she had to see him in the hospital bed.

“But I do understand that he is there to get better.”

Sean suffered second- and third-degree burn wounds on 17 October when his petrol-stained shirt caught fire.
