Pretoria Zoo welcomes baby pygmy hippo
This hippo would go through a breeding programme in Makopane when it was older.
Pygym hippo
A pygmy hippo bull, born at Pretoria National Zoo last month, will be released into the zoo’s enclosures next week.
Pygmy hippos are an endangered species native to Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Guinea, Rekord East reports.
Zoo spokesperson Craig Allenby said the hippo was doing extremely well.
Allenby said because pygmy hippos were much smaller than the common hippo and lived in forests, where it was easier for them to hide, they did not tend to be aggressive.
He said this hippo would go through a breeding programme in Makopane when it was older.
