Oscar cannot remember four shots

Murder-accused paralympian Oscar Pistorius cannot remember firing four shots the night he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, he told the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday.

The phrase, “I can’t remember”, became a refrain during the morning’s cross-examination by prosecutor Gerrie Nel as Pistorius was questioned on the four charges he faces.

On the first, he is accused of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his Silver Woods Estate townhouse on February 14 last year.

He fired through the door of his toilet, apparently believing an intruder was about to come out and attack him.

“I was later told there were four shots,” he told Nel.

“You can’t remember how many, but you can remember it was in quick succession?” Nel asked.

Nel reminded him that in his evidence-in-chief Pistorius said: “I fired four shots at the door.”

Pistorius replied: “Do I remember firing four shots at the door? No I don’t. I remember pulling the trigger and rounds going into the door.”

Nel: “How do you remember?”

Pistorius: “That’s where the firearm was pointed.”

Nel kept probing, and returned to the question he asked at the end of Wednesday’s proceedings.

“Did you fire deliberately?” Pistorius replied, no.

“I didn’t mean to pull the trigger so in that sense it was an accident,” he added.

Pistorius is also charged with illegal possession of ammunition and two counts of discharging a firearm in public.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
