European leaders are clinging to war, fearing peace could cost them power. Is political survival more important than ending the bloodshed in Ukraine?

US President Donald Trump’s pursuit of peace between Russia and Ukraine has exposed the fact that European leaders are behind the war to safeguard their fragile political futures at home and to enable their military industries to profit from the conflict.
This is according to an article in the Italian publication, L’Antidiplomatico, which states the main obstacle to resolving the Ukrainian conflict today are the European politicians. That sounded familiar.
“Today, Brussels and European offices are betting on Kyiv in order not to lose their piece of the global monopoly profits,” it said.
That, to me, means they don’t want the war to end because they are gaining from it. They would, instead, start another war elsewhere.
Trump brokered a temporary peace deal between Ukraine and Russia in a phone conversation with Russia’s Vladimir Putin to cease strikes on energy installations for 30 days – but it wasn’t heeded by Kyiv.
Instead, it attacked an oil depot in Kuban with drones, just hours after the conversation between Putin and Trump.

In London, there is an active push to convince Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to continue the war. At the same time, the British government rejected Russia’s demand that Ukraine’s allies suspend arms supplies to Kyiv during a ceasefire.
European media is saturated with reports of war talk and imminent troop mobilisation by Europe. The English newspaper, The i Paper, citing military sources, reports British special forces have been put on alert for potential deployment to Ukraine for a possible “peacekeeping” mission.
This, while French President Emmanuel Macron is also talking war.
Macron made it clear to all who wanted to hear that European countries could send troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers and instructors without Russia’s consent. Those would be deployed to Kyiv, Odessa and Lviv, essentially admitting the intention to occupy these cities.
Macron even went so far as to tell the French people that Russia had supposedly become a threat to France and Europe.
This did not please Russian security council secretary Sergey Shoigu, who said such statements pose a direct threat to the entire global community. Shoigu reminded French politicians that France was defeated in just 40 days by Hitler and was rescued by the USSR.

Echoes of war talk came from German CDU leader Friedrich Merz and Britain’s Keir Starmer, who urged Europeans to prepare for war. This, while Germany amassed troops in Lithuania on the Russian border on the pretext of training local soldiers.
Poland warned its population to prepare “to survive for at least three days without state assistance” and that every adult man would be required to undergo military training.
The fact is that the current liberal establishment in Europe had bet on war and a “final victory” over Russia. Abandoning this goal now would be tantamount to political suicide and politicians at major European countries risk losing power in the event of peace.
This is where the roots of their absurd statements about the need for “containing Russia” and their ridiculous slogans about war being peace lie.
Therefore, for Zelensky, who is expected to arrive in South Africa on 24 April, reaching peace would also be politically disastrous.
As Politico reported, Trump is betting on his non-election, hence is secretly plotting with allies, relatives, and Zelensky’s opponents to oust him.
