Shame on you, Dr Barney Selebano

Many years ago, Barney Selebano will have sworn an oath like this: “That I will exercise my profession to the best of my knowledge and ability for the safety and welfare of all persons entrusted to my care and for the health and well-being of the community.

“That I will not knowingly or intentionally do anything or administer anything to them to their hurt or prejudice.”

We wonder if his Hippocratic Oath as a medical doctor has been replaced by his hypocritical testimony under oath at the Life Esidimeni arbitration hearings.

In a classic display of ducking and diving – when he was forced to give evidence after his court bid to avoid doing so failed – the suspended head of the Gauteng health department first blamed his underlings for the tragedy in which 144 people effectively died of neglect.

Then he blamed his boss, former Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu, saying he was scared to stand up against her.

Who’s next on your blame list, doctor? The Man in the Moon? Vulnerable people died in your care. You did not exercise your profession to the best of your knowledge. You did not care for the welfare of those entrusted to your care. You violated your professional oath.
