Senzo’s killer will never be found, ‘myekeni alale ngokuthula’

I understand that this is a sensitive case for all football lovers, particularly those who support the Ghost that is Orlando Pirates. But let us step back a bit and look at the amount of murder and criminal cases that go unresolved year-on-year. I am talking about the ordinary people, those who don’t have access to the best legal minds. And if they can afford a lawyer or private investigators, they cannot afford to have a case dragging on for years because the funds are not there.

Also, the state tends to treat high profile cases with extra detail and attention, but they still could not nab the person who pulled the trigger and is responsible for Senzo’ senseless death. If they could not get to the bottom of an incident that happened five years ago, when there was still the opportunity to appeal to the witnesses’ conscience, when the opportunity to sell each other out still existed, what are the chances of getting to the bottom of this now, five years on? Clearly no one was willing to point a finger to anyone because, at least I believe, all of those witnesses know who pulled the trigger.

Now AfriForum has taken over the case from the South African Police Service because the family feels that SAPS have been dragging their feet on the case. Look, there is nothing that AfriForum is going to find in this case even with the astute Gerrie Nel running the show. The worst part is that Police Minister Bheki Cele is not sure where the docket is. If indeed it is lost, the case is as good as buried.

The sad part of this is that Senzo Meyiwa’s father, Wiseman, died with the pain of not knowing who killed his son, which is something that makes the family want to get to the bottom of it. At the same time, we need to look at this from a different point of view and understand this happens to a lot of families, and people die mysteriously without anyone being held to account. It is sad because Senzo was a great goalkeeper for the Buccaneers, so much so that they have not had a mainstay goal-minder since his untimely death.

I think we should find it in our hearts to understand that this case is unlikely to be resolved and in the true meaning of the words, let him rest in peace.
