While we may be disappointed with Ramaphosa, I opt for the snake we know

With almost everyone in the country now a political expert with high moral standing, the calls for the sitting president to step down have become louder.

It is impossible to ignore that the money that was safely tucked away in sofas will be an unforgettable taint on his presidency. And as some of us tread lightly in adding our voices to this chorus, the newly appointed experts see this as political ignorance.

And just like we have with the Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and now Cyril Ramaphosa administrations, we are forced to air our views in defence of our stance.

Ramaphosa, without any argument, finds himself in murky waters. He was the president who had many hearts captured as a formidable leader during the Covid pandemic. But he has now found himself between #handsoffRamaphosa and #impeachRamaphosa. It must be an uncomfortable place for him.

Some of us have remained silent on the matter because we recognise the leadership vacuum in our country.

As the vultures circle in order to get their seat at the table, we remain a country gripped in load shedding, a runaway economy, held hostage by crime. Someone clinical and without a secondary agenda needs to step into the role to stabilise the nation.

Looking deep into the ANC, as things stand, who can be counted among those who can do this? For now, not a single name springs to mind. So, when we are quick to call for a change of leadership, have we considered the alternatives?

Then, the even smarter ones ask: why not consider a leader from the opposition … with all these failing coalitions, precipitated by the opposition?

I would never trust a leader, relying on a coalition, to survive. When relations sour, so does the thin glue that holds them to power. They then move from the ideals which we voted for them to the very same party we gave them power to preside over. We have seen the EFF do this countless times.

While we may be disappointed and fed up with Ramaphosa, with the thought of the alternatives, I opt for the snake we know.
