Covid-19 fight far from over, warns Mkhize

It’s not often we agree with politicians, but Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize hit the nail on the head when he praised the frontline workers for their efforts in the fight against Covid-19.

We can only imagine the blood, sweat, tears and sacrifices our health workers have endured during 365 days of hell, putting themselves and their families second in a bid to care for those that needed medical attention.

Friday, 5 March 2021, marked exactly one year since the country had its first infection – a 38-year-old man from Hilton, who had returned from a trip to Italy.

We have now had over 1.51 million infections and over 50,000 deaths. Praise for healthcare workers is nothing new.

Pots and pans have been banged for them to show appreciation, vuvuzelas have blared in recognition.

But praise for our real heroes, even such small gestures of admiration, cannot be offered enough.

Mkhize also praised ordinary South Africans for the sacrifices they made in keeping to the regulations of the various levels of lockdowns.

With a third wave predicted before winter, we need to realise the fight is far from over and each and every person must play their part if we are to lessen the full effects of the pandemic.
