One thing spreading faster than coronavirus is the cottage industry which claims this or that day, this or that week, or this or that month, on behalf of some cause or group.

It makes sense – after all, the artificial celebrations of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day (probably created to spur people to buy presents or greetings cards) were so successful.

However, the proliferation of these special days does tend to lessen their impact, to put it kindly.

However, yesterday, the world marked International Nurses Day … and now, more than ever, it is time to pause and spare a thought for those people who can been called, many times, “Angels of Mercy”.

Nursing has always been a poorly paid job and often conditions in hospitals and clinics are more than risky, they are life-threatening.

With the Covid-19 pandemic roaring like a bushfire around the world, many nurses are going to become infected and many will die. And all because they chose a vocation where they would be serving others.

No greater love has a human being than that they offer up their life for another. And that’s what nurses do, day in and day out.

Words will never be enough to thank them for that sacrifice.
