Lots of positives in Bafana victory

As the saying goes, 'one swallow does not a summer make', so we don’t know what the rest of the rainy season holds.

Amid the feel-good energy generated by the soaking rain over the weekend – and the 6-0 thrashing of minnows Seychelles by Bafana Bafana – we think a note of caution is called for.

As the saying goes, “one swallow does not a summer make”, so we don’t know what the rest of the rainy season holds.

Nor should we infer from this football victory that the continent of Africa is ours for the taking.

The victory margin against the men from the little islands was the biggest in Bafana history – but one of the six was an own-goal by a Seychelles player.

There is still room for concern about the SA team performance, particularly when it comes to finishing. Against a team whose defenders at times looked a bit lost, our strikers could easily have put double the number of balls into the Seychelles net.

To be fair, Seychelles keeper Romeo Barra had a great game, pulling off some brilliant saves.

However, against opposition like this you should be burying your chances every time.

Still, there was plenty for coach Stuart Baxter – and Bafana fans – to be happy about.

Let’s hope this feelgood energy powers a Bafana turnaround.
