Is Gavin Hunt the unluckiest coach in South Africa?
This question just popped into my head as I was mulling over a conversation I had with colleagues.

It could be. That’s my answer to the question posed in the headline. Gavin Hunt could be the unluckiest coach in local football.
This question just popped into my head as I was pulling over a conversation I had with colleagues, with some suggesting that he might quit Kaizer Chiefs as he is not finding the answers that the club were looking for when they hired him at the beginning of this season.
Well, I know it might be a little premature to even think that Hunt would quit – after being in charge for a mere 10 games. But I think it is a reliant issue to discuss.
What makes me believe Hunt is unlucky is that he has had to shelve his dream of ever coaching Bafana Bafana when, at some point, he was the man almost every football fan believed could be an answer to our national team’s inability to compete at real tournaments and qualifiers.
But after trying for the job a few times, he decided he was never going to apply for it again.
And then, he got a very good chance to prove himself at a bigger club with Kaizer Chiefs. But it is like the universe has ganged up against him again.
First, it was the club’s transfer restriction that makes it almost impossible for him to change things around at Naturena with the same old players who have been failures for five years. And the fact that he can’t get to guide his team in front of their fans who are like the wind beneath the team’s wings as supporters are still forbidden in games.
I believe Amakhosi would be doing much better with their fans in stadiums. The fanfare and confidence that Hunt’s arrival gave the fans would have surely rubbed into the players as well.
But here we are and it doesn’t look likely at all that we will be having fans at stadiums anytime soon with Covid-19 said to be on the rise again.
