Farewell to one of SA’s cricket greats, Dale Steyn

He is a man of passion – and he left his heart and soul on the pitch every time he played.

One of the most daunting sights in any modern sporting arena must surely have been, from a batsman’s point of view, watching Dale Steyn steaming in to deliver another of his deadly guided missiles at you.

And that would be closely followed by his face, glowering at yours in celebration.

Steyn is a man of passion – and he left his heart and soul on the pitch every time he played.

With his announcement that he is retiring, it goes without saying that we salute his amazing record as South Africa’s leading Test wicket-taker … 439 in just 93 matches.

His average of just 22.95 and strike rate of 42.30 were also spectacular. Similarly, he set the world alight in the one day and T20 formats.

It is sad that it is Covid which has put a premature end to a stellar career.

Steyn has clearly been worn down by the training and disappointments of cancelled matches because of infections or lockdowns, not to mention having to perpetually quarantine.

So, it is good to hear that he won’t be lost to cricket and that, once he’s had a chance to properly chill, his experience will be available to help mentor promising youngsters.

Dale Steyn’s commitment to the game will continue.
