Thabo Bester deserves an award for one of the most brazen escapes yet. There should be a lot more Netflix specials about South Africa, as real life here continues to be shockingly entertaining.

Producers do not have to look too hard to find trending content, also known as “life in Souda”. Take convicted rapist and murderer Bester for instance. Known as the Facebook rapist, last year he escaped from Mangaung maximum prison after setting his jail cell alight.

The social media mastermind then made it look as if he was killed during the fire, by using a dead prisoner’s body, prompting correctional services to declare Bester dead. This was until he was supposedly spotted buying freerange chicken at a Woolies.

The department that declared him dead has confirmed Bester is, in fact, enjoying the premium retailer’s “Food for One” specials. The most unfortunate part about this saga is that his victims continue to be robbed of justice, while he gets to live his best life.

The other fact is that it takes an entire cast to put together such a daring production. The main actor is getting the all the glory, but what audiences are duly concerned about are the supporting actors and crew behind this award-winning performance.

As executive producer, the SA justice system is doing well to ensure there is no shortage of creative material.

There is an entire podcast of a former prisoner detailing how inmates are sometimes released temporarily so they can do their “nkabi” duties of murdering targets, only to voluntarily return to prison as there is no better alibi.

It also takes supporting actors to pull off such a well-planned escape and to evade the short arm of the law. Those in the department of correctional services must be awarded for playing their parts so well.

How else would it be possible for Bester to be enjoying the extracrisp aircon at his local Woolies? Forget the Tinder Swindler – the Facebook rapist is in line to be one of the most talked about actors of all time.

It takes a certain kind of creative mind to come up with a bogus Women in Media conference and to lure innocent women via Facebook, only to do what you please with them.

What I want to know is what the credits will say on the Netflix special for the main character, as the real Thabo Bester – a former convict – is busy trying to regain his stolen identity.
