WATCH: Chinese museum displays photos of black people alongside animals

The exhibit apparently aims at giving visitors a sense of 'primitive life' in Africa through the interplay of humans, animals and nature.

A video has been circulating on social media showing an exhibit at a Chinese museum in Wuhan, China, in which photos of black people are placed alongside animals showing the same expressions.

Instagram user Edward E. Duke posted the video on Instagram with the caption: “The capital museum in Wuhan, China, put pictures of a particular race next to wild animals, why? Are they the only race to have impoverished looking.”

The video has since been removed.

According to news website Shanghaiist, the exhibit was called ‘This is Africa’, and showcased the work of Chinese photographer Yu Huiping, which apparently aimed at giving visitors a sense of “primitive life” in Africa through the interplay of humans, animals and nature.

The museum’s director, Fang Qin, told the website that while the museum was mostly concerned with cultural relics, he saw the ‘This is Africa’ exhibit as a way of “providing a wider range of knowledge and artistic interest to visitors, enhancing the museum’s mission of social education and enriching the cultural life of the masses”.

But social media users are not impressed.
