Worker rescued from collapsed trench in Durban North

A man was successfully pulled out of a collapsed trench in Durban North by rescue workers who worked frantically on Wednesday evening to free him from the mound of sand, reports the Northglen News.

News of the man’s ordeal broke at 6.10pm on Wednesday, and still by 7.3opm, paramedics said they were struggling to free the worker.

Workers were laying cables when the trench collapsed, and while two of the three workers managed to escape with moderate injuries, according to Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care, the man was trapped for almost three hours.

“We had to use a specialist crane from the fire department and airbags in order to free him. The entire rescue operation lasted for two and a half hours.

“Fortunately, the 42-year-old escaped with minor injuries after being pinned under concrete and sand. I’d like to thank all the rescue services involved in the rescue,” he said.

SAPS Search and Rescue, Rescue Care paramedics and the eThekwini Fire Department attended the scene.
