Joburg police recover four AK-47 rifles in 48hrs

They are cracking down on crime in Soweto following a recent spate of crime.


Gauteng police are on a mission to recover illegal firearms that are in circulation in the province.

The Gauteng police spokeperson Captain Mavela Masondo said: “Subsequent to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles and a pistol in Kew on Wednesday, Gauteng Police recovered two more AK-47s and a pistol in Soweto east yesterday, 01 February 2017.

“Police and other law enforcement agencies conducted an intelligence-driven operation in Soweto, whereby Dube Hostel was raided. It was during this operation that police recovered two AK-47 rifles with fully loaded magazines and 9mm pistol in one of the rooms in a hostel,” he said.

Furthermore, police recovered several rounds of ammunition and different number plates.

The operation was triggered by recent murders and armed robberies in Soweto.
