Dagga worth millions seized by police

It is believed police obtained valid information regarding the existence of a dagga plantation in the area. Further investigation led a team of police, the K9 unit, volunteers and the Randfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) to the exact place where the dagga was located, and a search warrant made it possible for them to enter the premises.

It took the Police and CPF members about five hours to seize almost 8 000 dagga plants, with an estimated street value of R3 million.

Major-General Anna Mateisi, station commander for the West Rand Cluster Police, expressed her gratitude towards everyone who was involved in this endeavour and said she was impressed with the way the CPF and the police worked together.

“Your commitment and dedication is highly appreciated. Your efforts in reducing the availability of illegal substances are noted. Keep it up,” Mateisi said.

She also said the volunteers and CPF members made their work much easier and commended the fact that people were making themselves available for this back-breaking task.

Even though dagga will be rescheduled to a Schedule 6 drug, it is still illegal to plant, distribute and sell. In a previous press release regarding the destruction of dagga, Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the West Rand Cluster police, said as long as dagga remained an illegal substance, the police would confiscate and destroy it.

“Dagga is still an illegal substance regulated by law,” said Captain Ernst. “Until the law changes, the police have an obligation to confiscate and destroy the substance.”
