Woman commits suicide at Menlyn shopping centre

'I saw a body covered in a red blanket. When I left the mall at 19:40 the body was still there.'


A 45-year-old woman committed suicide at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre on Wednesday afternoon, Pretoria East Rekord reports.

The woman, from Pretoria north, jumped to her death from the sixth level at the mall parking bay.

An inquest has been opened and at this stage the motive for the suicide is still unknown, said police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.

An employee at Menlyn Park, who wished to stay anonymous said he saw a police van in the parking area at about 4pm.

“I saw a body covered in a red blanket. When I left the mall at 19:40 the body was still there.”

“I feel so sorry for the family.”

The incident took place at about 15:00 in the afternoon.

Menlyn Park shopping centre is still looking into the matter, and will comment later.
