Operation Fiela Two hits Joburg streets

Operation Fiela Two is expected to run for a year after which its progress will be evaluated.

As part of the recently launched Operation Fiela Two, Johannesburg police raided various businesses in Hillbrow, including alcohol outlets, where they confiscated goods, North Eastern Tribune reports.

Operation Fiela Two was launched on 23 January by Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown. He was accompanied by the newly appointed national police commissioner Lieutenant General Khehla Sithole, Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane and Joburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba.

Following the launch, Johannesburg police initiated serious crime combatting efforts targeting notorious buildings and shebeens in their quest to clear out all criminals.

Joburg East Cluster police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyai, said all security entities including Saps, the Metro police, South African Revenue Services, the Department of Immigration and the Liquor Board participated.

“After the launch, we all went to Hillbrow to search notorious buildings that are deemed problematic in terms of harbouring criminals, and raided illegal liquor outlets and businesses as well,” said Munyai.

“During the raid, 60 illegal immigrants were arrested and illegal liquor outlets were also closed and their alcohol and fridges confiscated and taken to Hillbrow Police Station.”

Operation Fiela Two is expected to run for a year, after which its progress will be evaluated according to media reports.

The first Operation Fiela was launched in 2015 with a focus on illegal immigrants.

Operation Fiela Two, as Sithole has been reported as saying in the media, has three objectives – to arrest suspects, remove criminals and close down the places from which they operate.

“The key deliverable under which this operation is being launched is to stamp the authority of the state. Firstly, we demonstrate our presence that in this country, there is a police service,” Sithole was quoted in the media.
