Motorists warned about signal jamming devices

Motorists are warned to be alert when parking their vehicles as thieves are using jamming devices again to steal valuables from unattended vehicles.

The Hartebeespoort Community Policing Forum (CPF) has issued a warning for people to ensure that their cars are properly locked before walking away, Kormorant reports.

“The jamming devices interfere with the remote locking system and the doors fail to lock. Don’t leave valuables in the vehicle, it is an open invitation to thieves.”

Romano van der Spuy, acting chairperson for the CPF, said that two incidents were reported last week alone, where motorists thought that they had locked their cars with a remote control. Motorists did not realise that while they thought they had safely locked their cars, the signal had in fact been jammed by thieves.

“In both cases, expensive valuables were stolen from the vehicles,” said Van der Spuy.

“The first incident was reported at Village Mall on Friday, when a woman locked her vehicle and went shopping. When she returned the vehicle was open and a laptop, tablet and modems gone. On Saturday a laptop and hard drive were stolen from a vehicle at Dreiers. The owner locked his vehicle and when he returned it was open and his belongings gone,” Van der Spuy said.
