Cable thieves strike again in Pretoria North

Technology-based security to fight cable theft will be implemented soon.

Several neighbourhoods in the north of Pretoria suffered power outages on Sunday, owing to cable theft in the area, Pretoria North Rekord reports.

The theft came just as it appeared that cable theft was on the wane in the area.

Multiple social media users asked what the City was doing to address the problem.

One of them, Danie Botha, asked:

Tshwane utility services and infrastructure MMC Darryl Moss responded that the City was working on upgrading their security services.

“The city expects to award the tender for watchman [security guard] services any time now,” said Moss.

“The roll-out of the new technology-based security system should also start by the end of the month.”

Many social media users slammed the metro for failing to deal with the problem sooner.

Moss said the implementation of the new technology-based security would see a significant decrease in cable theft and power outages.
