Security guard drowns after vehicle plunges into Hartebeespoort dam

A security guard from The Coves Estate in Broederstroom drowned in a freak accident early Saturday morning when a security vehicle drove into the Hartbeespoort Dam.

“The vehicle with two security guards ended up in the dam around 05:45. One of the security guards managed to get out of the vehicle and swam to shore but the other drowned,” Romano van der Spuy, chairman of the Hartbeespoort community policing forum told Kormorant.

“This is a tragic accident, and our community is deeply saddened by this event. The officer who passed away had worked at The Coves for five years, and was highly regarded by our residents and staff, as well as his colleagues,” said Martin Heyneke, The Coves estate manager.

He could not say what had caused the accident. “Until the police have concluded their investigation, there is no point in speculating on what caused the accident,” he said.

The circumstances around the incident are being investigated, and an inquest has been opened at the Hartbeespoort police.
